June 1, 2016: You’ve probably seen some recent news about Emma Morano, who at 116 years old is the last confirmed living person to have been born in the 1800’s. The phenomenal Wait But Why put up a Facebook post which mentioned there were around 1.5 billion people on earth when Emma was born in 1899… and all of those 1.5 billion people (except Emma) are now gone. Let that sink in for a moment.
Of those 1.5 billion people alive in 1899, how many could you name? A extremely insignificant percentage of them, right? Your “nameable” list would mostly consist of historical figures and your ancestors. In other words, the people who make an impression on you are the people you remember. There are seven billion people on earth right now, but one day we’ll all be gone from this place, just like those 1.5 billion people who were here for the year 1899. Don’t hesitate to make a positive impact on people around you. You don’t have to be a movie star, a billionaire, or a world-class athlete. All you have to do is be compassionate and supportive to others, and maybe you’ll be on someone’s “nameable” list 116 years from now.
